Benni McCarthy speaks his mind on Karren Brady and TSN - despite current efforts to engage the soccer public – let slip their old bias.
In response to criticism from his former vice-chairman – Brady - of his fitness during a recent spell with West Ham United, McCarthy referred to Brady as the “devil with a set of tits”.
In the wide ranging piece upon his return to South Africa following 13 years spent in Europe McCarthy vented about a variety of topics both general and personal. Well worth a read.
Now back to Canada, last night TSN’s Sportscentre evening loop contained this little archaic passage.
“The city of London is used to violence and hooliganism and generally it’s because of the football clubs, but Wednesday’s friendly between England and the Netherlands had to be called off because of all the non-soccer related rioting and looting that is currently going on in London. Now player safety was at the forefront of the decision; 70 000 tickets had already been sold.” - Darren Dutchyshen
While blaming Dutch for something that was probably composed in jest and under time constraints by a writer is not the proper way to go about addressing this inherent ignorance of soccer. The fact that he went on to mispronounce Martin Rennie and Tom Soehn’s names shortly after is equally unfortunate and indicative of the inadequate knowledge the network has for the game.
The brass insensitivity toward both the riots and football hooliganism is cause for concern, however their recent efforts of including the sport into their scheduling and conscious are reason to overlook what was at most a lazy and poorly considered joke.
